Indian Railways has ramped up security and crowd management operations to facilitate the massive influx of devotees during the 2026 Kanwar Mela. With the pilgrimage running from July 30 to August 11, and extended operations continuing in various sectors until August 28, authorities are managing a record-breaking surge of pilgrims. As of August 10, over 30 million pilgrims have participated, with expectations of reaching 40 million by the evening.
Key highlights for Kanwar Mela 2026 include:
- Deployment of RPF, RPSF, GRP, and paramilitary forces across 18 super zones.
- Real-time surveillance via 500+ CCTV cameras and drones managed from the Haridwar command center.
- Operation of five additional rail services and temporary stoppages for 16 trains at key stations.
- Strict safety protocols and passenger awareness drives like ‘Operation Jan Jagran’.
Comprehensive Security Infrastructure
The safety of millions is being managed through a multi-agency approach involving the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF), and local civil police. The Mela area has been systematically divided into 18 super zones, 40 zones, and 141 sectors to ensure seamless monitoring. Security personnel are equipped with Hand-Held Metal Detectors (HHMD) and Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMD), while specialized units, including bomb disposal squads and canine teams, remain on high alert to prevent untoward incidents.
Enhanced Train Services and Passenger Convenience
To accommodate the 10-12% of pilgrims opting for train travel, Indian Railways has introduced three unreserved Kanwar Mela special trains and extended two regular services to Haridwar. Furthermore, 16 trains have been granted temporary stoppages at Jwalapur, Motichur, and Rayawala stations between July 30 and August 13. Regular routes, such as the Delhi-Shamli DMU and Delhi-Saharanpur MEMU, have been extended to Haridwar to manage the heavy footfall. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Mahesh Yadav noted that additional coaches remain on standby should passenger numbers exceed current projections.
Safety Guidelines for Pilgrims
Railway authorities have urged pilgrims to follow specific travel etiquette to ensure a smooth experience. Devotees are advised to refrain from placing water-filled Kanwars on the ground, avoid intoxicants and non-vegetarian food, and maintain respectful conduct throughout their journey. Beyond security, the railway staff has been active in humanitarian efforts, with RPSF personnel providing life-saving medical aid to pilgrims in distress on August 6 and August 9. Passengers are encouraged to utilize Lost & Found centers and women helpdesks for any assistance required during their transit.
