Bhopal Division Introduces Token System for Tatkal Bookings Starting August 1 2026

The West Central Railway (WCR) Bhopal Division is set to streamline its ticket booking process by introducing a new token-based system for Tatkal reservations at all its counters effective August 1, 2026. This move is designed to enhance transparency and prevent the exploitation of the system by unauthorized touts. Key highlights of the new policy include:

* Priority A status for passengers booking for themselves or immediate family members.

* Priority B status for individuals booking on behalf of others, processed after Priority A.

* Token distribution windows: 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM for AC and 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM for non-AC.

* Aadhaar card or railway-recognized government photo ID is now mandatory for all bookings.

New Booking Guidelines and Priority Categories

According to Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Saurabh Kataria, the division is taking firm steps to ensure genuine passengers get preference. Under the new guidelines, each counter will typically issue 10 tokens for AC Tatkal and 15 tokens for non-AC (Sleeper) Tatkal, though these limits may fluctuate based on passenger volume.

For those in the Priority A category, passengers must present self-attested ID documents or government-issued proof of relationship when booking for family members. Priority B applicants are required to submit self-attested copies of their own ID along with the traveler’s signed ID card. This verification process is aimed at curbing the illegal activities of unauthorized agents who often crowd reservation centers.

Addressing Infrastructure and Utility Challenges

This transition to a more organized system comes as Bhopal faces significant civic challenges, specifically regarding power infrastructure. The city has recently struggled with 3 to 6-hour power outages in over 70 areas due to ongoing metro construction, maintenance work, and the installation of new electrical components.

Recent reports indicate that a 30% surge in electricity demand—rising from 410 megawatts to 480 megawatts—has put severe pressure on the local grid. Furthermore, the Madhya Pradesh Madhya Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Company Limited (MPMKVVCL) has increased the Fuel Cost & Power Purchase Agreement (FCPPA) surcharge from 1.11% to 3.77%. These rising costs and infrastructure strains have led to frequent voltage drops and, in rural regions surrounding Bhopal, power cuts lasting up to 8 hours. By implementing the token system now, the Bhopal Division aims to minimize the impact of these external utility disruptions on the passenger booking experience, ensuring that those who reach the counter are served efficiently.
