Indian Railways has officially launched a new online facility to streamline the booking of excess luggage, effective July 31, 2026. This digital upgrade allows passengers with confirmed reserved tickets to declare and pay for extra baggage directly through the IRCTC platform, removing the need to visit station parcel offices.
- Online convenience: Excess luggage can be booked during the ticket purchase process via IRCTC.
- Eligibility: Available for personal luggage in reserved compartments, excluding AC 3-Tier, AC 3 Economy, and AC Chair Car.
- Digital tracking: Passengers will receive SMS updates, though an e-Forwarding Note must be presented at the station for final weight verification.
- Special provisions: New rules effective July 25, 2026, allow athletes to transport oversized sports gear, excluding pole vault poles.
Understanding Luggage Limits and Charges
The core luggage policies remain governed by the Railway Board’s Freight Marketing Circular No. 38 of 2006. While the booking method is now digital, the permissible weight limits remain unchanged. AC First Class passengers enjoy a 70 kg free allowance with a 150 kg maximum limit, while Sleeper Class passengers are permitted 40 kg free with an 80 kg maximum limit.
Any luggage exceeding the free allowance but staying within the maximum limit will be charged at 1.5 times the standard luggage rate, with a minimum charge of Rs 30. If your luggage exceeds the standard dimensions of 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm, it must be booked and transported in the brake or parcel van.
Support for Athletes
Recognizing the challenges faced by sports professionals, the Ministry of Railways has introduced a special provision as of July 25, 2026. Zonal railways are now directed to prioritize the transport of oversized and delicate sports equipment, such as javelins, in luggage vans. While the maximum weight limits for authentic sports gear have been lifted, athletes are still required to pay the necessary freight charges. Please note that pole vault poles remain excluded from this specific policy due to technical handling limitations on trains.
