The North Central Railway’s (NCR) Jhansi Wagon Repair Workshop has pioneered a significant upgrade for goods train brake vans, setting a new benchmark for staff comfort and operational efficiency. Following the success of this prototype, the Railway Board has mandated a nationwide rollout of these modifications across all zonal railways. Key highlights of this initiative include:
- Nationwide upgrade: The Railway Board has ordered the modification of BVZI and BVCM brake vans during Periodic Overhauling (POH) and Routine Over-Hauling (ROH).
- Proven success: The first prototype was completed on February 27, 2026, with 42 units already in service.
- Large-scale project: A tender is currently active for the modification of 400 brake vans at an estimated cost of Rs 5 lakh per unit.
- Advanced amenities: Upgrades include solar power, ergonomic seating, and modernized interiors for train managers.
Enhanced Features for Train Managers
Under the guidance of NCR General Manager Naresh Pal Singh and CPRO Dr. Shivam Sharma, the workshop has transformed the standard brake van into a more functional workspace. A primary focus has been on ergonomics; the vans now feature a 360-degree rotatable seat paired with a dedicated fabricated footrest, ensuring train managers can perform their duties with greater ease during long journeys.
Sustainability is another core pillar of this upgrade. Each van is now equipped with 500-watt rooftop solar panels. This green energy setup, supported by a 12.8V/110 Ah Lithium Ferro Phosphate battery and a Combined Control Unit (CCU), provides 9-10 hours of power backup for essential lights and fans after a brief 4-5 hour charge.
Modernized Interiors and Safety
The interior environment has seen a complete overhaul. To improve durability and cleanliness, the floors have been fitted with high-durability polyamine epoxy resin, complemented by professional fleet graphics film and a redesigned, hygienic commode. Furthermore, practical additions such as a walkie-talkie stand, bottle holder, coat hook, grab handle, and a universal key door lock have been installed to simplify daily tasks.
This initiative marks a major official endorsement of the Jhansi Workshop’s innovative capabilities and reflects Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to improving the working conditions of its frontline staff who ensure the seamless movement of goods across the country.
