Indian Railways is significantly enhancing the passenger experience by rolling out new onboard announcements designed to provide real-time, comprehensive food information directly to travelers at their seats. This latest initiative, which is currently undergoing a public feedback phase via social media, aims to streamline the meal ordering process and ensure that every passenger is well-informed about their catering options during their journey.
Key updates to the catering services include:
- Introduction of direct onboard announcements regarding food availability and ordering.
- Expansion of e-Catering services for hot, hygienic meal delivery since May 2026.
- Integration of IRCTC e-pantry services across 25 dedicated trains as of February 2026.
- Mandatory display of food menus and pricing on all trains since March 2025.
- Strict quality control measures including QR-coded food packets and FSSAI certification mandates.
Digitizing the Dining Experience
Since July 2026, Indian Railways has aggressively pushed for the digitization of its catering sector. By allowing passengers to pre-order meals through official channels, the national transporter has successfully reduced dependency on traditional pantry car menus, offering a wider variety of hygienic choices. Passengers can now access menu details via SMS alerts, the IRCTC official website, and through onboard staff, ensuring transparency in pricing and availability.
Quality Control and Passenger Safety
Maintaining high hygiene standards remains a top priority for the administration. Since November 2024, the Railways has implemented rigorous protocols, including regular pest control in pantry cars and base kitchens. The system now utilizes QR codes on all food packets to provide transparency regarding the kitchen of origin and packaging dates. The department maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward unhygienic practices, a commitment recently highlighted on July 31, 2026, when Central Railway sealed a food stall at Thane station for failing to meet safety standards.
To further support these services, IRCTC launched a performance update to its new beta website on August 1, 2026, ensuring a smoother interface for online bookings. Passengers are encouraged to utilize the RailMadad grievance portal to report any catering issues, ensuring that accountability remains at the heart of Indian Railways’ service delivery.
