The Indian Railways is set to transform rail connectivity in Uttar Pradesh with a massive infrastructure push aimed at eliminating bottlenecks and reducing train travel times. Key highlights of the upcoming developments include:

  • A 90-kilometer doubling project on the Sultanpur-Pratapgarh section costing ₹1,000 crore.
  • The Phaphamau-Unchahar doubling project covering 72.27 kilometers, scheduled for 2026-2028.
  • Ongoing infrastructure upgrades for the Pratapgarh-Janghai and Badshahpur-Janghai sections.
  • Modernization of Sultanpur Junction under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Boosting Capacity with New Doubling Projects

The most significant development is the 90-kilometer doubling project between Sultanpur and Pratapgarh. Currently, the single-line track in this region is a primary cause of congestion and frequent train delays. Work is slated to begin this September, with the initial focus on the Phaphamau-Vishwathganj stretch. By adding a second line, the Railways aims to increase throughput and improve the punctuality of trains traversing this vital corridor.

Furthermore, the Phaphamau-Unchahar Doubling Project is set to expand the network across the districts of Pratapgarh, Prayagraj, and Raebareli. Managed by the Lucknow division of Northern Railway, this project carries an estimated cost of ₹899.28 crore. Construction is planned to commence in April 2026, with a targeted completion date set for March 2028. These projects are part of a larger Central Government initiative to modernize the rail network in Uttar Pradesh.

Infrastructure Upgrades and Station Modernization

Beyond these major doubling projects, the Railways is fast-tracking work on several other segments. Construction is already underway on the Pratapgarh to Janghai and Badshahpur to Janghai sections, with completion expected by 2026. These upgrades are critical for streamlining traffic flow and accommodating the growing demand for rail travel in the region.

Simultaneously, Sultanpur Junction is undergoing a major transformation as part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The station has already benefited from the implementation of a double electric-line track, which has significantly improved operational capacity and train speeds. To further enhance regional connectivity, the government has also approved new services, such as the Kalka-Sultanpur Superfast Express, ensuring that passengers benefit from both improved infrastructure and expanded train services. These integrated efforts reflect a concerted move by the Indian Railways to provide a faster, safer, and more reliable travel experience for commuters across Northern India.
