The transition from diesel to electric traction has brought significant financial and environmental gains. In the fiscal year 2024-25, the railways saved around 180 crore litres of fuel, which reduced costs by approximately ₹6,000 crore. Additionally, electric trains produce 89% less CO2 emissions compared to road transport.

India’s electrification rate is now higher than several major railway systems, including China (82%), Russia (52%), and the UK (39%). Moving forward, all new railway lines and multi-tracking projects will be built with electrification from the start.
