Indian Railways has launched a strategic initiative to tackle the massive passenger surge expected during the upcoming festive season. With demand peaking for journeys toward Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, the Railway Board is focusing on optimizing train compositions and expanding service availability to ensure smoother travel for thousands of commuters. Key highlights of the festive plan include:
• Standardization of 24-coach configurations across 3,200 mail and express trains.
• Guaranteed minimum quotas for sleeper and general class coaches.
• Extension of the Anand Vihar Terminal-Laukaha Bazar special service until September 15, 2026.
• Introduction of a new New Delhi-Supaul Junction special service running 56 trips through September 30, 2026.
• Enhanced booking protocols for upcoming Diwali and Chhath travel.
Focusing on High-Demand Routes
To address the heavy traffic toward the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh and the Kosi and Mithilanchal regions of Bihar, Northern Railway is prioritizing operational efficiency. According to the Northern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer, Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, these measures are essential to manage the influx of travelers during major festivals like Raksha Bandhan, Independence Day, and Nagpanchami. By standardizing 24-coach trains, the national transporter aims to maximize capacity on long-distance routes that traditionally see the highest congestion.
Booking Upgrades and Future Planning
Looking toward the peak travel period in November 2026, the railways have refined the reservation process for Diwali and Chhath. Bookings will open 60 days in advance at 8:00 AM, with a special 15-minute priority window reserved for Aadhaar-authenticated users to ensure fairness and prevent system overload.
Furthermore, passengers can look forward to a more tech-savvy experience. The national transporter is set to launch an upgraded reservation system in August 2026. This new software is designed to provide more accurate waiting-list confirmation probabilities, helping travelers make better-informed decisions when booking their tickets. These combined efforts reflect the railway’s commitment to simplifying the festive travel experience and reducing the anxiety often associated with securing confirmed berths during the busiest months of the year.
