Indian Railways is moving towards a greener future by increasing its use of solar energy. The Ministry of Railways announced on April 23, 2026, that the network has commissioned 1139 MW of solar power capacity as of March 31, 2026. This move is part of a larger plan to reduce carbon emissions and rely more on renewable energy for train operations.

What is the current status of solar and wind power?
The railway network has been steadily increasing its green energy footprint. As of December 2025, the total installation included 909 MW of solar power and 103 MW of wind power. To ensure long-term sustainability, the ministry has already tied up an additional 3,300 MW for future use.
What are the other green initiatives by Indian Railways?
Apart from solar plants, the railways are focusing on environmental conservation. During the 2025-26 period, Indian Railways planted 81.59 lakh trees to align with World Earth Day 2026. These efforts support the overall goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, as previously emphasized by Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
