Indian Railways has reached a major milestone in its mission to electrify the broad gauge network. According to official data from the Ministry of Railways as of May 31, 2026, the electrification of 70,002 route kilometers (RKm) out of a total 70,271 RKm has been completed. This means 99.6% of the broad gauge network is now powered by electricity.
Which states have pending electrification work?
While 25 states and union territories have already achieved 100% electrification, the remaining 269 RKm of work is spread across five states. The distribution of the pending work is as follows:
| State | Pending Distance (km) |
|---|---|
| Karnataka | 120 |
| Tamil Nadu | 68 |
| Assam | 55 |
| Goa | 16 |
| Rajasthan | 10 |
How has the speed of electrification changed?
The pace of electrification has increased significantly over the last two decades. Between 2004 and 2014, the work progressed at a rate of 1.42 km per day. This speed jumped to over 15 km per day during 2019-2025 and reached approximately 19.6 km per day in 2023-24.
What are the benefits and future plans?
Railway officials stated that this shift reduces dependence on fossil fuels and lowers carbon emissions. To maintain this sustainability, Indian Railways integrated solar power, commissioning about 898 MW capacity across 2,626 stations by November 2025. All new rail lines and capacity expansion projects will now be planned with electrification from the start.
