Central Railway announced the upgrade of the Signal Location Announcement System, known as SILAS, for all Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains on the Mumbai suburban network. This GPS-based technology acts as an electronic co-pilot for motormen to make train operations safer. The system has already undergone trials and will be installed across all Central Railway local trains within two months.

ℹ: Chhattisgarh Express: Extra AC coach added to train 18237/18238 to manage summer rush।

How does the SILAS system help motormen

The system provides audio alerts to the motorman about upcoming signals. It announces the signal number and its exact position, such as whether it is on the left or right. These alerts are given at 350 meters and 250 meters before the train reaches the signal. If a yellow signal appears, the system repeatedly warns the driver that the next signal is red until a green or double-yellow signal is seen.

Key features and safety benefits of the new system

The primary goal of SILAS is to achieve Zero SPAD, meaning no train will pass a signal at danger. It reduces human error and stress for motormen who manage trains alone with signals spaced only 400-500 meters apart. The system also monitors driving behavior and speed at critical points like platforms and neutral sections to help in training motormen.

Feature Detail
System Name SILAS (Signal Location Announcement System)
Technology GPS-based electronic co-pilot
Advance Alerts 350m and 250m before signal
Yellow Signal Warning “Be careful, next signal is Red”
Monitoring Real-time speed and location tracking
Station Alerts Next halt announcements (under development)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the SILAS system in Mumbai Local trains?

SILAS is a GPS-based Signal Location Announcement System that acts as an electronic co-pilot. It gives audio alerts to motormen about signal positions and numbers to prevent errors.

How does it alert the driver about a Red signal?

When a yellow signal is encountered, the system repeatedly announces ‘Be careful, next signal is Red’ until the driver sees a green or double-yellow signal.
