The Public Works Department (PWD) has started preparations to build a new underpass under the railway bypass in Yamuna Nagar. This project will be located between Maharana Pratap Chowk (formerly Kamani Chowk) and Vishwakarma Chowk. The PWD has already submitted the proposal to the headquarters for final approval.
Why is a new underpass being built instead of opening the old one?
The old underpass has been closed for about 11 years. Departmental officials stated that reopening it could damage the structure of the railway bypass due to technical reasons. To avoid this risk, the administration decided to construct a new underpass approximately 300 meters away from the old site.
What are the safety measures and impact on the area?
The stretch between Maharana Pratap Chowk and the railway overbridge has been a dangerous black spot. Since 2019, more than 35 people have died in accidents here. To stop people from crossing the road unsafely, the administration has installed five-foot-high iron grills along the bypass.
Who is handling the project and related work?
- Public Works Department (PWD): Responsible for the underpass proposal and construction.
- Municipal Corporation: Working on the beautification of the bypass road from Vishwakarma Chowk to Maharana Pratap Chowk.
